PARENTING NEWS & THE LIKE
🔗 Instagram: Tell us something we don’t know
I’m loathe to give space to obvious clickbait – it is, after all, common knowledge that processed foods are bad for us – but gee whiz.
I’m tired as hell with posts like this. It's good advice! No lies found. But, sadly, households with two full-time working parents get left behind with this sort of thing.
Yes we can use unprocessed foods and do big meal preps for the week, etc, but when your life is hectic enough, it's bloody hard to resist the packets and cans and jars. Reducing the use of processed foods is obviously better than doing nothing, of course. That’s the real advice here.
I suppose my grievance here is that the word “eliminating” is shitty language that just makes hard-working people feel like shit parents. Any page supposedly devoted to mental health oughta know that.
How do you go with making sure your kids are getting as healthy a diet as possible?

Here, have a cleansing laugh!

Okay, how do we get the orcas into the sky?
TECH & GADGETS
🔗 The Verge: This is an XBOX

Microsoft’s plan to turn everything into an XBOX recently gave us the Asus ROG XBox Ally, and now there’s this: piggybacking onto the Meta’s VR platform.
It’s a Meta Quest 3S, bundled with an XBox controller and three months of XBox Game Pass Ultimate, for about A$620.
Alas, it won’t be offered in Australia – it’s described as a super limited drop and appears to be available to the US and UK only.
I’m not big on VR myself – I’m the ‘gets queasy’ type – but I can see how this would be appealing. Still, considering the games themselves won’t actually be running in a proper VR format, that appeal seems pretty limited…
Agree or disagree? Do you have a Meta Quest? Let me know what you think of it!

🔗 Fairphone: “What if a phone could be made differently?”
It’s a nice idea, unless you live in Australia…
If you’ve been thinking about ways to clean up the tech side of your life, the Fairphone could be a good start. Alas, it’s not sold in Australia, so consider this a ‘what could be…’ look at what’s out there.
The key idea here is that you can upgrade and replace the phone’s components when it suits you, depending on your needs and – especially if you’ve owned it a long time – the condition of your phone. In all, there are 12 different components you can replace as needed. Of course, this depends on the business not going under, but they seem fairly popular overseas.
It’s got a mostly mid-range setup with the Snapdragon 7S Gen 3, 8gb of memory and 512gb of storage, along with a 120Hz 6.3” LTPO OLED display (that’s the good stuff), the latest Android 15, a five-year warranty and eight years of software updates.
There’s a replaceable battery (hallelujah!) and a micro SD card slot with support for up to 2TB of extra space (oh my word). In a few ways, it’s a dream phone for those who don’t need the most powerful system.
Samsung’s mid-range A56 is a great phone and similar in price, for example, but there’s no replaceable battery or expandable memory, so… food for thought!
Would you get the Fairphone 6 if you could?

SMALL STUFF
9to5Google: Chrome on Android is finally getting (or re-introducing) a bottom address bar! Hallelujah.
The Verge: Got any 8BitDo controllers gathering dust as they fail to work with your Switch 2? There’s a firmware update coming for that.
9to5Google: If you’re into foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 might finally be the one we’ve been wishing for. Too bad it’ll cost as much as a house deposit…
Apparently, this is the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro. 🤔

THINGS WITH WHEELS
🔗 Drive.com.au: New Patrol goes nuclear with Nismo bits

That is, well, quite a look.
Nissan’s new Patrol is expected to reach Australia in late 2026, but this 317kW/700Nm monster (using an upgrade to the turbo six rather than a V8) is still to be confirmed. Drive has the story here.
What do you think of the look? Are you into massive SUVs or..? How about the big electric Kia EV9 I reviewed back in 2023?
COOL STUFF
🔗 Google: Google Earth & Maps is getting historical images
To celebrate the 20th birthday of Google Earth, the tech giant is adding historical views to a whole host of key locations.
One really cool example is an overhead view of San Francisco in 1938, against the same part of the city in 2024.

🔗 Instagram: The world’s oldest Toyota lives in a Dutch museum
Here’s some pub trivia for your mates: This is the oldest Toyota in the world, and even Toyota itself only has a replica.
Discovered in Vladivostok, the unrestored car is privately owned and now resides in the Louwman Museum in The Hague, about an hour away from Amsterdam. (Brag: I’ve been there, it’s rad.)
The museum also has the donated desk of Dr Shoichiro Toyoda, grandson of the company's founder and the man responsible for Toyota's global expansion. Shoichiro passed away in 2023.
Incredibly, my first car was almost as old… okay, I lie, but it was a Toyota! The mighty ST162 Celica. What was yours?

🔗 Mental Floss: The most valuable Star Wars figures

Oh you think you got me with a gotcha right here don’t ya
Remember how Star Wars creator George Lucas offered to take a smaller upfront fee in exchange for the merchandising rights?
TBH I’m not sure a smarter business move has ever been made than that one, but a close runner-up might be all the dudes who held onto these classic figures. Check out those prices!
Darth Vader 12-Back A Double Telescoping – US$130,000+
Jawa (Vinyl Cape) – US$30,000
Yak Face – US$6745
Luke Skywalker (Unpunched) – US$5000
Boba Fett – US$4551
😂 wtf does ‘unpunched’ mean?
Check out the rest of the list here, some videos, and more of that backstory!
Are you holding onto any collector-prized toys?

DAD’S TECH TIPS
🔗 Brick Banter: Every new LEGO set coming on July 1

It’s too cold outside in Oz and too hot up north, so let’s talk Lego builds.
I’m pretty sure I’ll be picking up that Shelby Cobra, and maybe the Nike Dunk set – although I’m more drawn to the actual Lego-themed Nike sneakers revealed in May. (Although I have flat and wide feet, so most Nikes are off-limits for me! 😞)
What are your latest Lego pickups and what’s on your list to grab this year?

🔗 Etsy: MysticMesh3D’s retro TV dock for Switch 2

I’m growing increasingly obsessed with the wealth of 3D-printed accessories and trinkets out there in the world. Is it time for me to just pony up for a printer of my own?
In the meantime, I’m really digging what this MysticMesh3D guy has put together for the Switch 2, creating a little retro TV-styled dock for the console to live in.
Check out his store page, too, where you’ll find little 3D-printed game card holders in the style of a milk crate, a castle tower and a… bowl of noodles. 😂 Among other nerdy delights!
I must warn you, though: He’s based in the US, so shipping is prohibitively expensive. Just over A$35 to Melbourne!
If you do have your own printer, may I suggest you snap up the plans for this life-size model of Herbie from the upcoming Fantastic Four film? (There are 4” and 6” versions too, but… come on!)
SCREENTIME
🔗 Empire: Rogue Trooper movie coming from Moon director

If you’re not a comic book nerd, this won’t immediately mean much to you – but if you are, you’re probably as surprised as I am that it’s taken this long to bring the blue GI to the big screen.
The general plot is that the Genetic Infantryman goes rogue when his squadmates are killed through betrayal, so the last trooper loads his squadmates IDs and virtual personalities into his weapons and helmet (yep that’s what I said) and begins his quest for revenge!
The director, Duncan Jones, is the man responsible for the brilliant Sam Rockwell-starring film Moon, along with Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal and that Warcraft movie that didn’t go over too well with critics. Oh, he’s also David Bowie’s son.
Whether you’re familiar with Rogue Trooper or not, is this your kinda movie?

🔗 Instagram: GTA VII – Down Under!
WARNING: Extreme adult language and themes
While we wait for Rockstar Games to bestow GTA VI upon us in the far off future of May 2026…
This bloke has used AI to render up a mock trailer for a freakishly authentic seventh chapter of the popular franchise, set this time in Australia.
Is anything missing from this Oz-themed GTA or would you agree it’s spot on?

Love a good rom-com: My Mother’s Wedding
This was one of those moments where I thought a particular actor was always American, only to learn they’ve been English all along – but, no, ScarJo is just pretending to be English. Why not, eh?
Bound to be a few teary eyes out of this one. I do cry too bloody easily, I must admit!

ONE MORE THING: Season 4 of The Bear is upon us, so catch up!
If you’re new, or need a reminder, Mental Floss has a cool 20 Facts about The Bear story here.
(I haven’t finished season 3, so I’d better get onto that…)
DAD’S TECH TIPS
Get this app: ‘Boomerang: Email myself’
Available for iOS & Android

As much as I’ve mastered all the reminder apps and clever ways to pin notifications (a very Android thing), sometimes you just can’t beat an email to yourself.
That’s where Boomerang comes in. You simply set which email address it should automatically send to, and then you can quickly send yourself notes or forward links to yourself for later. It’s a fairly ‘one click’ process when you’re up and running.
I love to use it when I know it’s a thought or a link that I’ll want to look at specifically from my desk, rather than having my phone remind me of it later. But, keep in mind, it’s probably only going to be useful if you’re good at checking your emails!
What are your favourite and most reliable tricks for reminding yourself of something later?
That’s it for today!
Hey, this was fun. It all took a while to put together, but it was very fulfilling for me, so I hope you feel you’re getting your money’s worth. But, as always, hit reply or comment below if there’s anything you’d like to see added or changed about all of this!
Cheers,
